My sister and I had a blast! Our captain was a friendly knowledgeable young man named Clay. Between everyone on the boat we caught a total of 15 fish ranging from rockfish, flounder, Coho, to even a King Salmon. This was my first time fishing in the ocean. I was unfamiliar with the techniques and tackle, having only ever fished rivers for trout, however, Clay was there every step of the way to ensure we had fun and caught as many fish as we could. Thank you for giving me and my sister an experience I will long treasure.
My husband and I chose the half-day fishing excursion and enjoyed ourselves very much. Our boat Captain was Wayne Brown and he was excellent. His boat was clean and well maintained. He lives in Sitka, so he was very familiar with the area and the fishing. He did everything he could think of to try to find and hook fish! There were 5 guests on the boat, plus the Captain and a deck hand. We fished for about 3 hours using 2 trolling lines. We drew cards to determine who would reel the first fish to hit a line; I drew a high card, so I was first to reel when a fish hit the line about 1 hour into our trip. I reeled in an 18 lb King Salmon! Wow! What fun!! One other fish was caught on our trip (apparently the Salmon weren’t as prevalent as usual). Despite the disappointment at not getting more fish, the trip was fun and the scenery beautiful. But, that’s fishing! Sometime they are hitting and sometimes they are not. I was able to ship my filleted fish home to NC, also not cheap but well worth it I think. After all, I may never have that opportunity again.
My dad and I just finished our second trip with Angling Unlimited, our first was six years ago. Both trips were amazing, great crew, hospitality and the fish is unreal. Sitka is unique in salmon fishing as you catch king salmon at their prime, “brights” as they are sometimes called because of the bright silver color, they are the best tasting King/Chinook salmon you will ever eat. I’d highly recommend Angling Unlimited, they are a great outfit and will treat you to a once in a lifetime fishing experience. Like me, you’ll probably have to make it back again two make it at least twice in a lifetime.
Our group of 5 adults did the Half Day Sitka Sound Paddle. We were a variety of ages and experience levels. We all enjoyed the trip immensely. The owners and staff of this family business are friendly, welcoming, and knowledgeable about both kayaking and the Alaskan wildlife. While the tour is set up to be 3+ hours of paddling, the distance that you go seems to be on an individual group basis. The one-way nature of the tour allows you to pull out and get picked up at pretty much any distance. Our group did about 5 miles. We didn’t see any whales or bears, but we did see sea lions, bald eagles, a sea otter, and loons. One of the best parts of the trip was the homemade cookie that you are given to stuff inside your lifejacket to be munched on while you paddle! They also provide water during the paddle and a small lunch when you reach your pull out spot.
This was my first time kayaking and I was nervous. The entire team put me at ease and after a few minutes of paddling and getting comfortable with the boat, my attention turned to the incredible scenery. Conner had great instincts about what would interest us and we were able to see sea lions rolling in the water, many sea otters, including one with a baby on its chest, and seals. I especially liked that we paddled around beautiful islands so that I could see up close the rock formations, vegetation and kelp beds. We opted for the 4.5 hour trip and I’m really glad. I didn’t get tired and after our picnic lunch John picked up us in a motor boat and returned us to Sitka on a different route than we had taken, so we got yet another set of SE Alaska vistas. I am now hooked on kayaking and consider our experience with Sitka Sound Ocean Adventures to be the highlight of our trip. Sitka Sound Ocean Adventures is a family-run business and their family members and staff were top-notch kayaking professionals, experts about the region, and really nice people. I will be back!
Our multi-generational party had a great day exploring Sitka Sound with our guide, Garrison. He helped us see numerous bald eagles, a black-tailed deer, and interesting sea life under the water in a small channel that we never would have found on our own. Our cookie break in a kelp patch and lunch on a secluded beach were great. Very tasty food – the salmon puffs were even made by the company’s owner. Garrison knew a lot about the ecology of the area and made sure each member of our group (aged 27-61) had a great time. I enthusiastically recommend Sitka Sound Ocean Adventures for a fun, educational, and beautiful day on the water.
This is a must do activity if you get the opportunity. Absolutely brilliant for all ages all abilities. The staff are tremendous, very friendly and kit you in all the gear, the trip is not just enjoyable it’s educational and the views are just spectacular, they even feed you – the cookies I have to say are irresistible. Overall a great experience!
A friend and I went on a fabulous 2.5 hour kayaking trip. I was raining and the team outfitted us in rain gear that kept us nice and dry. Neither of us had kayaked before and the instructions were clear and easy to follow. We very much enjoyed kayaking around the islands and seeing all the beautiful wildlife, including eagles, sea lions, and jumping salmon! Garrison was our guide. He was so fun and personable and knowledgeable! This was one of the great highlights of our trip to Sitka. I highly recommend doing this!
There are beautiful islands, scenery and sea life all around you when doing this kayak paddle. It rained the day of our paddle, but the nice folks at Sitka Sound were well prepared to provide jackets, rain gear, and everything else we needed for the adventure. Our guide Malayna was knowledgeable, safety-conscious and allowed our small group to go at our own pace. She even was nice enough to email us her photos of us from the trip for free! No nickel and diming for a photo here! Overall a great experience that I would recommend.
This was a wonderful ride in the waters around Sitka. The captain and crew were very informative and asked us what we wanted to see, then they tailored the trip to match our interests. I enjoyed walking on the beach the most. The sand was beautiful. We were able to take pictures of sea creatures in the tide pools. Our naturalist let us touch most of them as he explained what we were looking at. While cruising in the Sound and exploring passages and coves, we saw several humpback whales, many sea otters, a brown bear on the beach, and lots of marine birds.
